What is Checked During a Balance Test

Hearing balance test
When a patient is experiencing balance problems such as dizziness or vertigo, a provider will use the patient’s medical history and perform a physical exam that will serve as the basis for ordering diagnostic balance tests. These tests measure the ability and function of the vestibular system and hearing to find the underlying cause the balance problem.

Vestibular tests include videoystagmography (VNG), rotation tests, video head impulse testing (VHIT) and vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP). Hearing tests include otoacoustic emissions (OAE), electrocochleography (ECOG) and auditory brainstem response test (ABR, BER, BSER or BAER).

In some cases, a doctor will order additional tests that include imaging, blood work, vision tests and allergy tests. If you or someone you care for is experiencing balance problems, diagnosing and treating the cause and symptoms is important.
