According to research out of the University of Manchester, as many as 20% of people who own hearing aids don’t actually wear them. Furthermore, 30% only wear them some of the time, and 50% wear them most of the time. That adds up to a lot of non-use.
If you have a pair of hearing aids sitting in a drawer somewhere, we’ve compiled a list of ways a visit to an audiologist can get you hearing your best again.
If Your Hearing Aids Don’t Seem Effective…
They may just need to be reprogrammed. Remember, the initial programming of your hearing aids was based on the results of your hearing test, which took place in a sound-proof booth. Real-world listening situations like P’s Pizza House present different challenges. This is why attending follow-up visits is so important for successful outcomes with hearing aids.
If Your Hearing Aids Feel Uncomfortable…
You may need a new earmold. Impressions can be re-taken of your ear to get a better fit. If the earmold is causing itchiness or rashes, your audiologist can order a new earmold made out of a different material.
If You’re Having Trouble with Care & Maintenance…
Your audiologist can provide a refresher course on how to care for your hearing aid at a clean and check appointment. These appointments are essential for keeping your hearing aids in proper working order and should occur every six months. During a clean and check, your audiologist will deep clean your device, diagnose any problems with it and either repair it in-house or, if necessary, send it to the manufacturer.
If You Have Concerns About Stigma/Appearance…
Today’s hearing aids are built to be small, sleek and discreet. If your device isn’t, you can consider upgrading. If you do sport a newer model and you’re still self-conscious, know that wearable technology is becoming increasingly popular, and most people wouldn’t think twice about seeing a piece of tech sitting in your ears.
