There are several things to adjust to when you start wearing hearing aids—including making sure they stay in place. While they should usually remain in your ears without an issue, poor fit, moisture and sweat or movement may cause them to fall out. At Ear, Nose & Throat Consultants, we recommend the following tips to help your devices remain in your ears comfortably.
Ensure You’re Wearing Them Correctly
Though it may seem obvious, one of the first steps to ensuring your hearing aids remain in place is making sure you are wearing them correctly.
- Check that each device is in the proper ear.
- Smaller models should sit flush with your ear canal.
- Larger models should sit flush with your earlobe.
Accessories Can Help Hold Them in Place
Hearing aid clips and retention cords are designed to help your hearing technology where it should be. They attach to your hearing aids and clip onto your clothing, so that they don’t hit the ground if they slip from your ears. These items can be especially helpful for children and athletes.
Follow a Regular Cleaning Routine
Because hearing aids can attract dust and earwax, it’s important to clean them daily. A buildup of earwax can also cause your devices to become dislodged, so doing so will help keep them in place.
Keep Your Ears Dry
Whether you’ve been exercising or get caught in the rain, moisture may cause your hearing aids to fall out. Be sure to dry them off after being in moist weather or after a workout. While you’re exercising, it may be helpful to use a sweatband to keep your ears dry. You can also talk to your audiologist about moisture-resistant hearing aids.
Have a Fitting by an Audiologist
The best way to keep your hearing aids in place is to have them fitted to the inside of your ears by an audiologist. This ensures you will have an optimal experience with your devices and can continue with your favorite activities uninterrupted.
