A laryngoscopy allows your doctor to view your voice box in action. This procedure is used to identify the cause of your voice problems, throat pain, trouble swallowing or globus sensation (the feeling of a lump in the throat).
First your doctor will review your medical history and symptoms and complete a physical exam. Then a topical anesthetic is sprayed in your throat and a flexible scope is inserted in your nose and down your throat. You will then be instructed to speak, sing, cough, sniff, etc. while your doctor watches a magnified image of your vocal cords. The images are recorded on video.
